Why you must apply to companies before graduating

Why you must apply to companies before graduating

One of the core reasons why international students struggle eminently while doing job-hunting in Japan is mainly due to the uniqueness and specificities of the culture.

To what degree it is different?

Well, first of all, Japanese companies carry out the hiring process during a fixed time in a year, and like always there is a story behind it. In a nutshell, the Japanese government controls the job-hunting periods and as a result, the companies have to comply with them. These periods might vary year to year, but usually, they start from March 1st and end on October 1st.

Now do pay close attention, because this is important. No matter when you graduate, whether it is autumn or spring, the job-hunting periods are the SAME for everyone.

If you want to get employment after you graduate, you need to apply to the companies during the job-hunting periods, while you are still at university.

For instance, say your graduation is in autumn 2021 and you wish to start working right after that. For that to happen, you will need to apply to companies starting from March 2021. That is six months before your graduation.

Likewise, if your graduation is in spring 2022, you will have to apply to companies starting from March 2021. That is a whole year before your graduation.

Now, let us closely observe these job-hunting periods:

Applications for companies officially start from March 1st.

Application screenings officially start from June 1st.

The dates above might slightly vary from company to company, as well as the application periods, so it is crucial to check the job-hunting schedule of the companies you are interested in.

Can you see where I am going here?

You must familiarize yourself with the job-hunting schedules of the companies you want to apply to before the process officially starts, so you do not miss any deadlines.

This means, that you need to:

  1. Understand which career path you want to pursue
  1. Understand the industries you are interested in
  1. Understand which companies you want to apply to
  1. Understand the job-hunting schedules of those companies

The realization that all of this information should be prepared by March before your graduation, is pretty intense right?

But do not worry! We can do it together. I will walk you through the process. Plus, our team at Job Tree Japan will always be there to help you out.

To be honest, not all companies follow this job-hunting period scheme.

So, yes, it is technically possible to get a job offer during autumn or winter. Do not get overwhelmed after reading this article, instead contact us, ok?

Wishing you all the very best in your journey and looking forward to hearing from you!
